The first joint-doctorate degrees in the INSECT DOCTORS programme awarded in November 2023
Among the fifteen early stage researchers in the European joint-doctorate programme INSECT DOCTORS, Jennifer Upfold and Carlotta Savio are the first two to have successfully defended a PhD thesis. They both received a PhD degree from two universities.
Jennifer (left) defended her PhD thesis based on her research performed at INRAe in Joey-en-Josas (France) and at the Copenhagen University (Denmark). Her PhD thesis focused on gut microbiota and host gut immunity in wax moth larvae (Galleria mellonella) during infection with pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Jennifer was supervised by Dr Vincent Sanchis-Borja and Dr Annette Bruun Jensen. Jennifer received a PhD degrees from the University of Paris Saclay and the Copenhagen University.
Carlotta (right) studied the effect of probiotic bacteria on the performance of mealworms (Tenebrio molitor) and their susceptibility to entomopathogens. She successfully defended her thesis at Wageningen University (WU). She was awarded a second PhD degree from the University of Paris Saclay. Carlotta was supervised by Prof. dr Joop van Loon (WU) and Christina Nielsen Leroux (INRAe).
